ARTISTIC DIRECTOR/CHOREOGRAPHER

Karla Finger Coghill received her M.A. in Dance from American University where she was later appointed as an adjunct lecturer. While at American Karla was honored with a graduate teaching fellowship as well as the Evelyn Swarthout Hayes award for her outstanding contribution to the arts. Prior to founding Sidelong Dance, she performed extensively with Washington D.C. companies Shadowdance and D.C. Dance Theater. Her choreography can be seen in the repertory of Project:Motion in Memphis, TN and Sister's Trousers Dance Company in Sterling, VA. Karla has also set pieces on Salem College's DanSalems, Dance and Company in Harrisonburg, VA and the Suitland High School Visual and Performing Arts Center in Maryland. She has performed at venues as small as PS211 and as large as the Kennedy Center. Karla is currently teaching dance at the Academy of Dance Arts in Winston-Salem and the University of North Carolina Greensboro, and has taught previously at Wake Forest University. |

Julia Young Edwards is a native of Winston who has been studying multiple
forms of dance for twenty years and choreographing for six. She graduated high school
from NCSA with a concentration in modern dance and then studied for two years in
the Ohio State Dance Department. In May 2004, she graduated from the
College of Charleston, SC with a Bachelors of Science in Sociology. In Charleston,
she performed and choreographed with Anonymity Dance Company for two years
from 2002-2004. Julia has performed throughout North Carolina, Ohio and
South Carolina. She hopes to apply her study of people and love for movement
to many positive outlets from which she can continue to learn.

Melanie Fehrenbacher has been in love with dance since age six. Growing up, she was very
fortunate to receive classical ballet training from the Raleigh School of Ballet, Bounds Dance
Studio, and N.C. School of the Arts. Throughout college at UNC-Chapel Hill, she commuted
for three years to perform with Duke University's Dance Department. She then moved to the
Triad for her Master's in Education from Wake Forest University where she discovered Sidelong
Dance Company in 2004. Melanie presently lives in Greensboro and teaches English at Northwest
Guilford High School; however, she continues to find deep joy in teaching and performing dance
whenever possible.

Preston Fletcher has been dancing for 20 years. She began her dance training in Raleigh, North Carolina,
at Premier School of Dance. There, she studied ballet, lyrical, tap, and jazz and was a member of
the Senior Dance Company. In 2005, she received her B.S. in Mathematics from Wake Forest
University where she continued her training with the WFU Dance Company and
began her modern dance career. During her senior year she received awards
for best choreography and most dedicated dancer. She is now working for Aon Consulting in
Winston-Salem. She finds that dance is a way for her analytical mind to express itself without
the confines of formulas or equations.

Sarah F. Garcia began her dance training at age six in Asheville, North Carolina,
at Fletcher School of Dance. There, she studied ballet and jazz and had the opportunity to
dance leading roles in several Nutcrackers and other performances. In 2000, she received her
B.A. in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and she went on to earn
her Masters in Teaching from UNC in 2002. Sarah has been teaching English at West Forsyth High
School since 2003. Her modern dance career began when she joined Sidelong Dance Company in 2004.

Perry Mauzy began her dance training at the Academy of Dance Arts in Winston-Salem,
NC. Her professional training includes the School of the San Francisco Ballet,
the School of American Ballet and the North Carolina School of the Arts
(NCSA) where she attended junior high school and high school majoring in ballet. Upon
graduation from NCSA, Ms. Mauzy danced with the Charleston Ballet Theatre (CBT) in Charleston,
SC from 1989-2000. As well as being a soloist dancer with the company, Ms. Mauzy taught
on the CBT faculty for 11 years and was the assistant to choreographer Jill Earthorne Bahr.
From 2000-2004 Ms. Mauzy attended Salem College in Winston-Salem, NC
where she graduated magna cum laude with a B.A. in Arts Management.
Her academic studies allowed her to be a student at St. Peter's College of Oxford University
and at the University of Edinburgh where she received a M.S. degree in the History of Art.
Ms. Mauzy has been a pilates instructor for the past 5 years and currently teaches at the
Mindful Movement Center in Winston-Salem.

Melissa Pihos is a native of
Winston-Salem, now residing in Greensboro. She holds a BA in Biology
from University of North Carolina Greensboro. She worked at Guilford County for
several years as an Environmental Health Specialist and then switched careers
to teach Earth Science and Astronomy at Northwest High School in Guilford
County. She is also a dance instructor at Nan's School of Dance in Greensboro. She has
studied dance for over 20 years, receiving her training at Academy of Dance Arts in Winston-Salem,
Appalachian State University and UNCG. She has danced with Sidelong Dance
Company since 1999.

Emily Quinn is currently pursuing an MFA in Choreography from the University
of North Carolina at Greensboro. Originally from Owensboro, KY, she studied dance
from a young age and performed with Owensboro Dance Theatre for five years.
Emily received a BA in Dance from Washington University in St. Louis and an
MA in Performance Studies from New York University. Prior to moving to
North Carolina she taught ballet, modern, and repertory at St. Petersburg College
and performed with Co-Motion Dance Company in St. Petersburg, FL.
Emily joined Sidelong Dance Co. in 2006.

Terri Winchell is an artist/educator, teaching, dancing and
choreographing in a variety of venues. Last year Terri served as an Assistant Professor
of Dance Education at Winthrop University in Rockhill, SC.
Terri obtained her BFA degree in dance performance from East Carolina University
and later earned an MFA degree for Pedagogy, Performance, and
Choreography while attending Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.
Additionally, at an early age, Terri studied dance in Wurtzburg, Germany. Throughout
her training she performed extensively with such companies as Atlantic Dance Theatre
and Collectively Speaking, which she co-founded.
